Subdivisions and Note Delays Per Track in Buzz
A Track = one column in the pattern editor
Which machines is it in ?
BTDSys Samplegrid, Matilde, PsiDrum2, Jeskola Tracker, Infector(!), and usr's 'midi'wrapped machines
Why is this concept useful to me ?
To have good shuffle/groove in beats using trackers, we have to use note delays/subdivisions like in matilde ED xx, 0F xx which is really useful, and works well unless your subdivision is very high, i think the default is 6 for triplets, but you can set it to whatever you want so it doesn't matter
The result is we can work in a lower tpb or higher tpb whatever you want..
Also, we could do a global bpm shift in the master pattern or with 2nd Process's Igroove
But its just way clearer and fun in
Fuzzpilz FuDrums2
Here we get a column just for subdivision so u basically set it to what u want for that particular pattern, in essence, you are zooming in and out depending on what values/configuration you use for hits with just a quick number input when u create a pattern

you do know hexidecimal don't you ? You can have 1/2 1/4 1/8 1/16 1/32 1/64 1/ 96 1/128 (just like quarter, eigth, sixteenth 'notes')

and
0F = 15
the only 'extra work' you would need to do is have a pattern with just this
tick 15 delay 0F
so it would start with that hit if u wish

and so on, you can get even more crazy having both subdivisions and note delays/whatever effects changing on each 'tick' you input into the pattern editor
u can use this to create flams, rolls, swing, all kinds of stuff, once u get comfortable with the system
no its not a visual zoom in-out but that doesn't mean its not there

But its just way clearer and fun in Fuzzpilz FuDrums2 Here we get a column just for subdivisio.... samplegrid is like this also, and has parameter access. which means you can use other peermachines or whatever else like you mentioned towards the end of the review.

Cool tutorial, nool. I'm trying to cover the Sgrid part; can't upload the according file now, so I'll do that later.
I'm afraid there's no way avoiding delay/subtick matters. Of course, there's the overall shuffle amount option in Sgrid or the possibility of employing Igroove or similar machines, but this applies an equal amount of shuffle to all tracks.
Trying to automate the delay argument params with PeerCTRL, I wasn't able to get the swing, so I subdived and delayed.
Sgrid_Groove: Using delay / subdiv to shuffle beats; do tuplets and dotted notes.
Swing:
A good rule of thumb is to delay every othe note.
If you want a 8th swing have the Notes on Ticks 0,4,8,12 straight, on Ticks 2,6,10,14 delayed. The straight hits come louder than the late ones.
If you want a 16th swing transfer the 8th swing gridf accordingly (i.e. 0,2,4,etc. straight; 1,3,5,etc. delayed).
Shuffle in %:
People are used to shuffle amounts in %. You can emulate the percentage with the following Hex:
1. Set Subdiv to 64 (that gives you 100 slices per tick).
2. Set Delay to each amount you like: 0C=12%, 19=25%, 25=37%, 32=50%,
4B=75%, 57=87%, 64=100%.
Example pattern Hihat & Kick:
Hihat plays 8ths: Kick similar: delayed on 6,10,14:

This is only a rough draft. The amount of delay depends on your taste; vary individual notes to get the thing lively.
Tuplets:
You normally can make tuplets on the fly by adjusting the song's TBP or the maximum Ticks per pattern. But doing so, all the other machines have to be sequenced accordingly, which means rethink, rethink, rethink. Here's an alternative that lets you keep TBP4.
Meaning of the numbers below: three half note triplets make one note, so you got to divide 16 ticks by 3, which results in a distance of 5,3 ticks per triplet. So place the second triplet 5 ticks after the first and adjust the 0,3 ticks delay with delay argument (this would be 1E with a subdivision of 64). Following, subdiv is always 64.
Triplets:
3 Triplets 16 Ticks/ Every 1st trpl 2nd trpl 3rd rpl
half note 3 5,3th tick + 0 + 5 ticks, delay 1E + 5 ticks, del 3C,
quart note 6 2,6th tick + 0 + 2 ticks, del 3C + 3 ticks, del 14
eigth note 12 1,3th tick + 0 + 1 tick, del 1E + 1 tick, del 3C
Quintuples:
5 Quintuplets 16 Ticks divided by Comes every
half note 5 3,2th tick
quarter note 10 1,6th tick
eight note 20 0,8th tick
-you might have figured out the way it goes (number before the comma means
tick, number behind the comma means delay in percent)
Couldn't get rid of the looping noise occuring on eights-tuplets. Has someone a solution?
Triplets with retrigger:
-Using the retrigger command is easier but, however, results in slightly impure tuplets.
Triplets w Retrigger:
Retrigger-Argument Subdiv
Half Triplet EF 3
Quarter Trpl. EF 6
Eight Trpl. EF 12
Dotted Notes:
The principle's clear and is hardly worth while to be mentioned. Dotted means a note and the next longer/shorter go together. i.e. in Ticks: if the distance between note1 and 2 is two ticks, the distance between note 2 and 3 has to be 4 ticks.
Inverting dotted notes or mixing them with tuplets brings nice patterns.

We could avoid all this delay and sub-division stuff by using the max TBP in all are tracks. There's one major problem with that though and thats the pattern editor is absolutely no fun to work with at that high a TBP.
However, if we're clever coders, we could solve this with something like WaveScreamer. A user interface add-on that interacts with the pattern editor at max TBP and makes it easier to work with. A zoom utility basically. I'd try coding it myself but I just don't have time. But if anyone else does it would really improve Buzz. 2004-02-16 by psilosly (Voted 9 for this review!) |
