Quantisation of any individual Instrument/Generator via PeerChord.
Before peerchord came along, you couldn`t apply quantization to individual instruments..at least
not easily or properly. Using Groovebox you could, but it was choppy and used a trick/delay/playback
method. It`s useful to create other sounds but not great for a real shuffled sound.
With peerchord you can shuffle the pattern clearly and precisely. You can even have some additional
fun by controlling PeerChord`s shuffle lenght with a peerlfo or other peercontrol.
Here`s how:
1) Download/Play the demo, changing Arp Mode from Up to Off occassionally so you can hear the difference.
2) Create a new bmx, add your machine, I used infector for this example because its pretty common. you can use anything
with note input**, even VSTi`s.
**becareful with matilde, you need to initialize your samples in a pattern some by having
a c-4 ## 01 in there on each row.
3) Now add BTDSYS PeerChord (it should be in /generators). Right click it and choose Assign.
On the assignment window, choose the instrument you want PeerChord to control from the listbox.
Once you have your machine selected, in the Note Par. choose `Note` and in the Vol Par. select whatever you
want that`s available. Vol Parm. has two abilities: A remote value controller (for something on the
synth such as volume, which is nice to have in the same pattern as the note input), and an additional
parameter for 0-100% degree of randomization of the value (with center val).
4) When you`re using PeerChord, what you are doing is remotely controlling the note input. It can also be
used for other things such as an Arpeggiator and auto-Chording to any selected 0-Chord Type. When using Chord`s
make sure the synth that you are controlling has 3 or more channels (rows) added in its patterns, or else it will be
monophonic (unless the machine has virtual channels--not too common and normally not set by default). So unless you
want to use your Instrument`s patterns for recording slider patterns or changing presets/patches you can even
remove that pattern row from the sequencer view.
5) PeerChord has built in note delay and an arpeggiator with shuffle. The arpeggiator is where the ability to
shuffle any machine comes from. NO--YOU WON`T HEAR AND ARPPEGIO IN YOUR TRACK WHEN DOING THIS. Unless you want to
that is. In my example you hear no arpeggio`d notes. How? You set the Step Length of the arp higher than the largest gap
between your synth`s notes and set Arp sets to 2. there for it will only shuffle the original note and get cut off before
you hear.
One disadvantage to this use of PeerChord means that you can`t use the auto-chording while using the arpeggiator
for this. Normally, the Arp works by "stepping" out the Chord/Scale you have selected. Since we`re cutting it off after
the first note in the arp, we don`t hear any additional notes. Unless there`s an update that changes this
you`ll need to use multiple assignments in Peerchord, to manually do your chords as you normally would. To add more
assignments in PeerChord you need to first create new Rows in it`s patterns (Pattern Ed. -> Ctrl + ). Once you do that
the next time you right click PeerControl and goto Assign, you`ll see additional assignment slots.
6) In my example, I`ve also added a PeerLFO. After step 256 you can hear/see (open up PeerChord) it`s usage. I`m using it
to randomize the step lenght with ArpShuf Len (which is basically a fine controller for ArpShuf Step, 0.00-1.00 ticks.)

| I forgot to mention that you can shuffle you`re entire track but not individual machines, using 2ndProcess IGroove. ;]

Argh ! Get a noise burst.
Will try to download the other bmx, when I will have time, just to see. I'm in a PeerChord period and this machine is so great.
BTW : my review (just the second before your review) Cool keyboard with HD JGuitar use PeerChord too... 2003-04-26 by magmavander |

here's a lil demo mp3 that uses this technique except on drums ;].. i've got several gens controlled by one peerchord (using peerchord as a drummachine basically, each chan=different drum hit/generator). The shuffle is only on the kicks and hats.

I'm just listening to it. It's cool but a little short to hear the effect completely :o)
Use the shuffle on drums is a good idea. It gives a human touch.
At this moment I'm playing around with PeerChord to simulate a solo part with the Arp function. The use of the shuffle in this case seems a very interesting way, and if you add with it an other Peer machine (PeerControl, PeerLFO or Peer ADSR)it must be cool.
Good work.

| hey now this is a really nice idea !! it is a long read, but explains very nicely how to use and abuse peerchord .... you can use it a 'tracker' .... basically turn the chord off and have your way with its wonderful parameters including arpeg type, step, length, velocity control, delay randomization, strumming .... tweak the nuts off those melodies :) 2004-04-03 by noolout (Voted 10 for this review!) |
