gobot recommends:

Tracks that sound thin cannot be saved by exaggerated use of effects. Smart tracks start with smart programming/usage of the generators. Use less effects and just in the right places! Save the original sound and ideas of what you did in yr machines. - gobot

  REVIEW

Hoover Synth again... (requested on the wishlist)

Date: 2002-11-13 Author: Elektroj?nis Viewed 2615 times

This is not a proper full review... Just a quickie. Someone asked for hoover sound on the machine wishlist and I found some info on the net about those and came up with this sound. It's not probably too much like the Dominator by Human Resource (it's been years since the last time I heard that track) but a quite nice sound for some things... (Although I myself totally overused it in my old amiga mods as probably did many others. :-)

Beware! You might hate this sound!

So... I'm not going to write a lot of stuff about how to make this sound here... Examine the example and you will see. The most important thing seems to be the detuning of the oscillators (detuned to almost sound out of tune) and doing mad pitch slides all over the place.

Experiment with the detuning of the oscillator 2 and the tuning of it in general... Now the detuning is set to 25 cents and transpose is set to 12. TRy setting the transpose to 0, 7, 19, 24, 5 or something like that and also to the other direction... Down that is... instead of up. Also try to turn down the sub osc for thinner sound.

For more crispy sounds tweak the Temp or remove one of the phatmans or then just use eq to boost (upper) mids/treble.

Also experiment with the glide value. I prefer working with the trackter commands (01, 02, 03) to do the pitch slides but if you want to play it on your midi keyboard or something you might want to use the glide (some patterns in the example use it and some don't).

As always with my reviews this can probably be tweakked to sound better...

The 808 beat and the O1 bassline is there just for fun. The Infector is the main thingy.

Also check these other reviews about hoovers:

Have fun!

"Beware! You might hate this sound!" you said in the SongInfo. "Me loves this sound!" me say. Verry cool...! 2002-11-13 by mercutio

Hamster: Thanks! I just tried to whip up some patters that show some ways this sound can be used.

mercutio: Nice to know you like it... The reason some people might hate it is that it was really overused in some oldskool techno mods (as samples ofcource) something like ten years ago. (Gee... Was it treally that long ago...)

Hmmm... Making that stuff made me wan't to make some oldskool (or whatever) style techno tracks... And maybe spice them up with some breaks... Hmmm... Maybe some day...  2002-11-13 by Elektroj?nis

[shameles promotion]BTW. Today is my birthday. If Anyone wants to give a present then playing my stuff on mp3dotkom is nice! :-P (There is nothing new there though.)[/shameles promotion] 2002-11-13 by Elektroj?nis

hey electrodude did u say u used an amiga man those were the days man ol octamed. See when i think about it the sound chip on the miggy had a very unique sound i still think about setting it up but the thought of using a 25mhz machine kinda puts me off oh yeah back to the chip it sounded very musical not like the blasters oh yeah and the 19** function great for trance and stuttering vocals and loops.I always thought that if the amiga continued we,d ended up using something like buzz 2002-11-14 by boombaxx

I did use an Amiga and I still have it... It's only the standard A500 (with a few modifications i made). 7.14 Mhz Motorola 68000... I think there is still many printers in use that have some version of this chip in them but I'm not sure. It's not all in the clock frequency... Later when I got my first PC I noticed that for some things the 7.14Mhz of the Amiga beat the hell out of the 33MHz of the PC. I actually did not care for PCs too much but got one because it was good for some things. I Still used the Amiga for music for quite long.

I first used soundtracker and then moved to protracker... I used protracker 2.xx (I'm not totally sure but I think it was 2.something) even after 3.xx versions came out. Not that the tracks I made are any good... They are actually quite crappy, but it was because me, not because of the tool.

I still use it every now and then... It's not in very good shape though. I have lost the screws that keep the cover in place so I have taped it together. :-) Works still... It does not boot always though, but I have a fix for that. Shut it down and shake it and turn it back on. Works every time! 2002-11-14 by Elektroj?nis

sounds like the same trick i use for my nes... lol 2002-11-16 by kris kaylor

Well i used a 1200 with a 25mhz upgrade and 8mb of ram it was quicker than most pc,s at the time But was soon out gunned but like u i hate windows with vehemance it crashes constantly the only reason i got one was beacause the tunes i was making were blowing my amiga right outa the water but the same is happening with my pc now so it looks like i have to upgrade mac anyone don,t know i would love to use Buzz with a 3Ghz P4 and just keep adding fx and tracks till i was bouncing off the scale i don,t know if it would be possible though it would take a helluva lot of tracks to achieve this i think 2002-11-16 by boombaxx

Cool! This sounds a little like something Steve Vai would do on a guitar ... I especially like the Jeskola O1 chugging away ... 2002-11-19 by valveman

Steve Vai on a guitar??? If that comment is on right review then tell me what are you on? I want some of that stuff too! :-) Seriously... could you explain... (If it's not just a comment that has drifted to wrong review.) 2002-12-02 by Elektroj?nis
