Playing multiple machines via one track; alternative to mC-1

Date: 2005-01-30 Author: hbasm Viewed 4599 times

I was trying to play a melody on multiple machines and control them from a single track. You know, it's much easier to edit only one track while composing a melody, than having to constantly copy/paste that track into other machines and eventually be forced to edit the tracks for compatibility.

The mC-1 was made for this purpose but it is rather limited at the current state of development. I found another solution that some of you might find useful: It turns out, you can use Polac's VST host to control any buzz machine that supports midi. Here is how:

Run Polac's VSTi host and select any VST instrument, it doesn't matter which. For the sake of clarity in this tutorial I'll pick a name for that instrument, lets say it's called FM7.

Then have Polac's host receive midi from the FM7 and send it to other machines you'd like to control simultaniously. You do this from the menu "midi send".

We are not quite done yet. Notice that the FM7 and most other VST instruments only receive midi, they do not send it any futher. But they will need to send it back to the host, for this to work. Because Polac's VSTi host will only send midi that it receives from the VST.

So you need to do one more thing. Download a VST instrument that acts as a kind of "midi thru". One that simply forwards the midi information it receives. It will go back to the host, and from there it go to the other machines you've chosen. There are a range of such VST's you can optain for free, for example at www.tobybear.de They are bundled in "midibag.zip" and they can actually do a little more, beyond acting as midi-thru.

Anyway, now you need to connect one of those, lets say the "chordator" VST from TobyBear properly in the chain:

FM7 >> Chordator >> Master.

Then you can program the track in the Chordator (notice that it's not the track that belongs to the FM7. You don't need a track for the FM7 at all). The Chordator VST will be treated as an effect plugin, but the track will look exactly like any VSTi plug-in, running in Polac's excellent and versalite host.

So now you can control any machines in Buzz that supports midi. For example you can have 3 machines play the same note simultaniously and control it from a single track. Or you can have them play notes individually and still control them from only one track.

(Eventually you want MIDIwrapper as well. It should make all buzz machines midi compatible).

BTDSys PeerChord does both of these things (controls note params on other machines, and can do chording. either/or) 2005-02-06 by mute (Voted 7 for this review!)

a good example of midi send tho 2005-02-06 by mute (Voted 9 for this review!)

oh and another step further .. you can use Polac MIDI Bus (comes with the current version of PVST @ xlutop.com/buzz) to control buzz machines and other plugins that don't use midi send. 2005-02-15 by mute (Voted 9 for this review!)

NI FM7...

Good choice..
