Using Energy XT's Piano Roll in Buzz

Date: 2004-10-29 Author: thOke Viewed 11984 times

Here is the first simple step-by-step-tutorial how to use ENERGY XT within BUZZ :

Using Energy XT's piano roll in Buzz

You can import a midi file or, of course, make your own sequences. I chose the midi import here. It's a variation from Bach accompanied by a rather stupid 808 in Buzz just to make things a little more clear. ;-)

You need, of course, Energy XT
(You can use the full featured demo, but you can't reload your project until you purchased it - it's REALLY a bang for the bucks ~50 $ )

... and you need the latest version of Polac's VST(i) adapter
(... because it contains the 'midi bus', which is necessary for this tutorial)

1.) Buzz Setup

a) Add PVSTi, load Energy XT as an instrument, connect it to the master.

b) Add a Buzz Generator (here:Infector) and the MidiBus, connect Infector to the MidiBus and to the master. (I inserted a Sonic Verb between Infector and the master ... but you know how these things are working :) ). Add some tracks to the buzz gen to make it polyphonic.

c) Right click on PVSTi/EnergyXT and set 'Midi Send' to MidiBus

... alright ... basic Buzz setup is done

2.) Energy XT Setup

a) Double click on PVSTi to open Energy XT

b) Insert the SEQUENCER part

c) The midi input of the sequencer is automatically connected to Energy XT's 'Master In', but you do not have a 'Midi Out' yet.

ca) Open the sequencer by double clicking it. Go to 'File' section -> add Midi Port.
Now you have a midi out for the sequencer. Connect it to 'Master Out' in the main Energy XT window.

cb) Right click on the track you want to use and choose 'Output' -> 'Midi Out' -> 'Port 1'.

cc) If you want, you can go to 'File' in the sequencer and import a midi file. (You'll probably have to correct the starting position of the imported midi file. If your midi file has more than one track, the 'Midi Out' for each track has to be assigned seperately). You can choose different Buzz gens for each track. (same procedure: add buzz gen, add midi bus etc.)

d) Go to 'Options' in Energy XT's sequencer and select 'External Sync'. After that you can click anywhere in BUZZ's (!!) sequencer and Energy XT's sequencer will automatically jump to that song position. (Use 12 steps in Buzz's sequencer for this tutorial to see all 808 patterns)

... well ... that's it, basically. Now you should hear the Infector sequenced by Energy XT's piano roll after hitting play in Buzz.

You can also use the MIDI part or the Arpeggiator like this, but the sequencer can be synchronized to Buzz's song position, while the others are running until they are triggered again. Buzz trigger note is C-3 for the Midi Part and the Arpeggiator (... but this will probably be in another tutorial :))

Hope, i didn't forget anything important and didn't f*** up the html.

Here is a screenshot showing most of the steps:

I forgot to mention, that you can send Midi directly to a Buzz machine, if you load it into a PVST(i) loader as well. Advantage of this method is, that you can record the midi notes sent by Energy XT (or any other VST plugin that can send midi notes) ... Midi Bus doesn't allow recording (yet ?! ... a feature i would really like to see implemented if it's possible) 2004-10-29 by thOke (Voted 5 for this review!)

great review thoke, thanks a whole lot ! 2004-10-30 by noolout (Voted 10 for this review!)

clear and very useful. 2004-10-30 by tinga (Voted 10 for this review!)

Well ... i think i made a mistake. Midi Bus does not work with MULTIPLE tracks/channels. If your midi file has more than one track, you CAN NOT send track 1 via channel one to Midi Bus 1, track two to Midi Bus 2, track three to Midi Bus 3, etc. . Midi Bus always receives ALL channels.

For multitrack tasks you have to load the different buzzmachines into seperate PVSTis, because only there you can set up different midi-receive channels. (another feature, that would be nice to have in Midi Bus) 2004-10-30 by thOke (Voted 5 for this review!)

thank you. thank you. thank you.
it seems like every three months or so, someone posts a message asking about piano roll in buzz. now we have somewhere to send them.
i downloaded the xt demo long ago, but never installed it. think i'll try out this procedure..... 2004-10-30 by highsc0re (Voted 5 for this review!)

Thank you Thoke! One question: I cant locate this 'External Sync' in the options - only colors settings there(EnergyXT 1.24). Can u help, pls? 2004-11-09 by Max Lilt (Voted 10 for this review!)

The current official version is 1.2.8 ! I don't know, if the 'external sync' option was already there in 1.2.4. Download the latest release - it has MANY improvements compared to 1.2.4. 2004-11-10 by thOke (Voted 5 for this review!)

Max Lilt: You're in the wrong Options dialogue. Open the "Sequencer" comp and look at the top menu. There's another "Options" menu up there on the Sequencer comp and you'll find the "External Sync" option there.  2004-11-11 by arkiruthis (Voted 5 for this review!)

ok thanx, I've got the right pack now
but impossible to connect Midi Bus to Infector
When I load the Bmx exemple, it is not connected and when I try to do it, I can't
I have the last Infector (downloaded here) 2004-12-04 by critical-state (Voted 5 for this review!)

I seriously can't figure out how to get this to work with Pvsti. how do you make the machines communicate? If I want to control a vsti in buzz using eXT, but without midibus. Is there an example file of midi communication between Polacs's? Ill check the manual in the meantime. tahnks! 2005-11-06 by funkadil (Voted 10 for this review!)
