  REVIEW

PeerADSR and the Age of Enlightenment

Date: 2004-07-23 Author: bignic Viewed 3214 times

I'm sure theres tutorials/reviews elsewhere on this subject, but I thought I'd share my limited experience anyway.. Hopefully it'll get someone else to experiment with it (even if its just the simple functionality that I use)

When I first got into Peer controllers I was like a frightened boy being told that if he wanted to grow up, he'd have to hunt down and kill a bear with his own hands.

This might very well be possible, but unlikely that I'd be able to do it unscathed.

So with much apprehension, I delved into the world of peer controllers and took advantage of the one controller that appeared to be the most useful (for my own music that is)

Frightened that there would be strange and magical setup and configuration options, I added the machine to my layout view and began to setup the process as I would instinctivly understand it to work.

PeerADSR was easy like a drunk cheerleader.

Simply add it to your machine layout and right click and select "Assign Parameter". Thats all you have to do to assign one of PeerADSR's envelopes to a machine. Once you click the unsigned param that you want, you'll be prompted as to which machine you want to control, and which param of that machine.

Then simply add a pattern to the PeerADSR's sequence, and put in a few triggers in the pattern, and you're all set. Depending on what param you're controlling with the envelope, it can be hard to hear the effects, so play with PeerADSR's attack/decay/sustain values (like you would with any other envelope)

1) - Firesledge Parametric EQ

Upon using it for the first time, I was aware of the limitiations - being that a machine that clicks when you alter its param is still going to click when peerADSR alters the param. I havent found a way around this (just dont use machines/params that are known to be clicky)

In the past few days I've found that Firesledge's Parametric EQ does a nice and clean job of gain, so I use it fairly often for volume envelopes. Its especially neat if you add 2 or 3 tracks to the PeerADSR and have them control different frequencies or gains on the ParaEQ.

In fact, even if you just want a volume envelope, i fyou have a fast computer, use the Parametric EQ and experiment with some subtle boosts/cuts attatched to peer envelopes, cause it'll more often than not afford you a big fat sound thats very organic.

2) - Whitenoise's Stutter

I'm currently really enjoying this effect on drums and percussive sounds (try a nice 16th note repeating electro kick through a flanger)

drum source -> flanger -> stutter -> paraEQ -> out

Using it with Dry out set to 0, and wet set to 100, Im controlling the output with a PeerADSR envelope on various frequency ranges in a Parametric EQ. This basicly allows you to control the stutter like a delay (instead of the stutter's basicly 100% feedback)

Try timing the trigger for the envelope (that controls gain for a freq range in firesledge) at the same time as the trigger for the stutter. The stutter will fade out. Then you can increase teh attack time on the envelope (in a pattern) and trigger it again, causing the stutter to fade back in.

Anyway, I hope some of that made sense. But don't take my word on stuff, experiment. Peer machines are so new, I dont think anyone's done EVERYTHING yet. So, GO! and DO! I know I have a lot of experimenting to do. I'm going ot be trying out the PeerLFO next. I've used PeerChord already, but havent found it to be terribly useful (I dont usually swap out too many generators so in my own situation its kinda useless)

"PeerADSR: easy like a drunk cheerleader." Every machine needs a tagline of this magnitude.
Good review, and it's good to see you overcame your fears of the Peer machines. I think it's impossible to emphasize how powerful they are, and how fundamentally they can revolutionize one's experience of using buzz. I hope this encourages more people to go out bear hunting. 2004-07-24 by kmkrebs (Voted 8 for this review!)

peer machines are great subject, many good r eviews (consult), try combinations of peer machines they are just wonderful, and peer chord is great great machine, we like it.  2004-07-24 by tinga (Voted 7 for this review!)

haha! I've been using whitenoises stutter a lot lately as well. I found it interesting to hook two of them up and use a peerctrl mapped to both of them ("wet" and "trigger" were the params) but with input reversed for one (one of the most kickass features of Peerctrl). So when one goes on the other goes off... You get continual stuttering, much like Oval or Nicholas Collins, but without the annoying cd-skipping sound. Now I want to try this with your enveloping technique. Nice review, lots of words! 2004-07-25 by wizenwet (Voted 10 for this review!)

nice review :) peerchord is good for much more than just swapping generators, u can get subtick grooves, arps, chords, no chords, etc, etc, the name is misleading :) ... peerlfo is simple and can do a ton of automations .... rest of peer machines rock too .... but yea good stuff bginic, good to see ya on the reviews :) 2004-07-27 by noolout (Voted 10 for this review!)

Nice. Great ideas. 2004-08-17 by anomaly76 (Voted 10 for this review!)

Great review. This has encouraged my return to play with all the peer machines, after being scratched by the bear several times I was less inclined.Nice to see someone being honest and writing about their aprehensions. We can`t all be experts, life would become boring if we were. The advice will be put to good use thanks for a very useful review.Add the previous vote to this comment:) 2004-10-17 by peewee (Voted 10 for this review!)
